Unified Quest

UQ18 Deep Future Wargame

The purpose of the Deep Future Wargame is to understand how the Army can contribute to the multi-service multi-domain capabilities required to defeat a near-peer adversary in a 2035 operational environment. Two planning events precede the wargame: the Core Planning Group (CPG) April 9-13 and the Staff Exercise (STAFFEX) May 7-13. During the CPG in April, participants will develop joint, interagency and multinational concepts of operations to deter and/or defeat an adversary during competition and armed conflict periods in a 2035 multi-domain environment. The May STAFFEX is for participants to refine their concepts of operation to enable optimal learning about future concepts, capabilities, and organizations.

The Deep Future Wargame immediately follows the STAFFEX May 14-18. In this event, participants employ the concepts, capabilities, and concepts of the operation developed in the preparatory events since Joint Capabilities I. Using the MDB and other multi-domain service concepts, participants in five of the working groups will determine how U.S. Forces:

  • Deter the escalation of violence, defeat threat operations to destabilize the region, and turn denied spaces into contested spaces should violence escalate
  • Maneuver from contested strategic and operational distances and with sufficient combat power in time to defeat enemy forces
  • Conduct deep maneuver by air, naval, and/or ground forces to suppress and destroy enemy indirect fire and air defense systems and reserve forces
  • Enable ground forces to defeat the enemy in the close area
